E-Commerce Is Growing, but Most Retail Sales Still Happen Elsewhere

The U.S. Census Bureau puts e-commerce at about 16.4 percent of retail sales in 2025. Most sellers need to run both channels well.

E-Commerce Is Growing, but Most Retail Sales Still Happen Elsewhere

The numbers

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that e-commerce sales accounted for 16.4 percent of total retail sales in 2025. In other words, roughly one retail dollar in six is spent online, and the rest is not.

Both channels at once

Many small sellers do not choose between a shop and an online store. They run a market stall and an online shop, or a physical store with a marketplace listing. The challenge is the same in each case: stock, prices and profit are spread across several places, and each place has its own fees and reports.

Know your real profit per channel

Sales totals can mislead. A sale on a marketplace carries platform fees, payment fees and shipping, while a counter sale does not. To compare channels you need profit after costs for each order and each channel, and a single view of stock so that you do not sell an item twice.

Tools for both sides

For online sellers, our Multi-Channel Seller Profit & Inventory Dashboard shows true profit per order, platform, product and month in Excel. For the counter, MayPos Shop is our planned point-of-sale for small retail shops and is still in development.
